Descent: Tales of Good and Evil

The Shadow Rune

The twin baronies of Rhynn and Carthridge lie on the outskirts of Terrinoth, far from the Free Cities. Baron Greigory often hosts his friend and ally, Baron Zachareth, at his seat in the capital city of Arhynn, and, over the years the two baronies have aided one another in times of both war and peace.

But now, both baronies are in peril. Monsters stalk their forests and mountains, moving with more purpose and coordination than ever before. A new Overlord is rising, a wicked and dangerous foe, hidden in the shadows, manipulating events according to his master plan. If the Overlord isn’t stopped, Rhynn and Carthridge alike will fall into darkness, and the rest of Terrinoth will soon follow. Fortunately, a band of heroes are on the road to Arhynn…

The band of heroes is gathered on the outskirts of the twin baronies of Rhynn and Carthridge at the behest of Xander Smyth. Together the caravan set forth to the once prosperous city of Arhynn.

Xander has gathered a mixture of all sorts to come to the aid of the the baronies: Among them is a devout battle cleric, Avric Albright who is skilled in both combat and the art of mending the wounded.

The mystical druid Ashrian, commands a mastery of the spirit world and can speak many tongues and can be found useful in countless situations.

A oft-drinking dwarven mercenary by the name of Grisban the Thirsty. Fierce in battle and at the bar.

A retired military scout, Jain Fairwood. Jain was the only survivor of an entire command in one of the random border wars a few years back. Her ability to survive is surpassed by few.

With much convincing a mage by the moniker Leoric of the Book also is in the company of the heroes. His knowledge and power is as vast as his ego.

A truly heroic knight of the Latari elves, Syndrael still searches the lands to find out why her noble lord was declared a traitor to her people. Whilst searching she seizes the opportunity to fight injustices throughout the land.

Of course every band needs a gnome and/or a thief. Tomble Burrowell fills both of these most critical needs.

Finally, there is the Widow Tarha. Her most unfortunate tale has gifted her with the unique talent of command of the dead. Such a talent can be beneficial during dire times.

As the party is traveling toward Arhynn, Jain rides up from the front and alerts Xander Smyth to a situation.

Jain: There has been an attack on a trading caravan a ways down the rode.

Xander begins to formulate a response as he sees Syndrael’s golden hair blowing in the wind as her white steed gallops down the road.

Xander: Well guess that is that. Forward, make haste!

Upon investigation one of the caravan guards, wearing the livery of Baron Greigory, lies wounded.

Guard: An am… bush…

Avric Albright tends to the guards wound enough so that he can regain his speech but not quite stand.

Guard: An ettin is sending minions straight into Arhynn through the secret path! How could they have known?!?

Tomble Burrowell appears as if out of nowhere.

Tomble: Yup! Big ugly head knocker is just roun’ d’ben. I heared it talken to i’self. Guess’n it is named Maul’r.

At the mention of an Ettin Ashrian’s eyes glow with rage and she bolts around the corner. The rest of them make haste to catch up with the lightning quick elf.

Mauler’s minions are taking a secret route to attack Arhynn, Baron Greigory’s capitol city. If too many minions escape through the tunnel, Mauler’s mission will be successful. The party must kill him before that happens.
